FriendFinder – A large dating site with over 1.4 million members. FriendFinder allows you to connect for free in chat rooms and IM. They also allow free members to respond to paid members, although there may be a limit on the number per day. Try FriendFinder Today
Match – is a large site that was started in 1995. They used to be my top recommendation but they removed a feature that allowed free members to read and respond to messages sent by paid members. Try Match.com – One Week Free

Matchmaking:

Free Sites:
Plenty of Fish – was started in 2003 by Markus Frind as he was annoyed that dating sites made you pay to chat etc. and wanted to make something better. Today the site claims to have 30 million registered users and is the most visited dating site in the US, Canada and the UK (as per Hitwise). PlentyOfFish recently added a paid upgrade to help members increase their odds of meeting someone.
